Another study in New York analyzed the data of 21 women who suffered femur fractures. Twelve of them had been users of bisphosphonate class of drugs (of which Fosamax in one) for over eight years. Analysis of their bone structure showed reduced bone tissue as compared to the other nine patients who had not taken such prescriptions. The condition is so dangerous that the Fosamax patients have no indication when the femur bone may just give way.
FDA To Review Fosamax Problems
High number of these cases forced the FDA into action. In March 2010, the FDA announced that it would undertake a review of Fosamax problems relating to the femur fractures. Further pronouncements indicate that the FDA may ask the company to insert warning regarding chances of possible Fosamax femur fractures on prolonged use. In the meantime, many cases of Fosamax problems, especially those relating to femur fractures, forced many patients to file lawsuit against the manufacturer.

Fosamax problems also include another side effect called osteonecrosis. This is a condition in which the jaw bone deteriorates so badly that it is irreversible. Again in 2007, the drug was implicated in yet another Fosamax problem –that of atrial fibrillation which involve irregular heartbeat or heart rhythm. In a study of Fosamax side effects, it was found that users of this drug faced a 50 percent greater risk to contract atrial fibrillation condition as compared to those who did not take it.
In some cases of Fosamax problems, patients using this drug complained of stomach disorders, indigestion, reflux as well as constipation. While many of these Fosamax problems were successfully treated, FDA asked the company to issue warning that the use of the drug could increase the risk of esophageal cancer.
